This paper presents two methods to determine optimal passenger route choice. The first method uses a multi-objective model to solve the train service planning problem and determine the passenger volume served by each stop-schedule. The second method constructs a passenger transfer network based on the train service plan, and then the transit assignment is carried out. Through analysis of the passenger flow composition of each station, the optimal passenger route choices under these two methods were obtained. The case study on the to-be-built suburban line in Shanghai shows that the optimal passenger routes choice of these two methods with the same passenger origin-destination (OD) differs. The conclusion indicates the applicability of each method: the first method helps to evaluate the whole level of train service plan affected on the physical rail network, and the second method is used in train route arrangement and assessing the design of intermediate transfer stations.
