Railway transport offers high travel comfort, safety, and effectivity. So that, the topical aim is to find possibilities for further improvements of design solutions, such as continual monitoring. This contribution deals with the possibility of axle gearbox hinge for above mentioned purpose. The hinge is relatively simple and available component of the partly sprung drive. The reaction force in the hinge is influenced by the behaviour of the other parts of the drive group and the type of loading. The contribution is based on theoretical analysis of dynamic behaviour of the bogie group and drive and on relatively large experimental testing. Non-linear parametric model is created to test the dynamic behaviour. Both spatial dynamics of the bogie and the torsional dynamics of the drive is taken into account. The hinge response is tested in various situations such as damage of the springs or claw coupling. Experimental measurements are carried out with the drives and bogies with appropriate design to verify theoretical results. The results prove the suitability of the axle gearbox hinge as a diagnostic element for monitoring of the spatial system changes such as spring damages. The hinge could be used as a diagnostic element in the real drive conditions by simple strain gauge measurement and in-time evaluation. This could be used for example for predictive service, that would spare costs and increase the travel comfort and safety.
