The formation mechanism of rail corrugation has been widely studied, some of which concluded that some local vertical bending modes of rail are the key factors. In fact, these vibration factors cause rail corrugation by affecting the wheel–rail microscopic contact behavior. Thus, this study establishes an analysis route of the macroscopic dynamic response–microscopic contact behavior–localized wear characteristic–rail corrugation and investigates the effect of microscopic contact behavior on rail corrugation formation. These results demonstrate that the longitudinal creep and stress distributions are quite different from the lateral distributions due to the wheel–rail spin. These differences make the localized wear amplitude on the contact patch caused by longitudinal creep distribution much higher than that caused by lateral creep distribution. Furthermore, the time–history variation trend of longitudinal creepage caused by rail vertical vibration has a significant influence on rail corrugation, while the influence of lateral creepage can be ignored.
