While it is generally agreed that access management has a significant effect on traffic safety, present research on access is not enough to support the government to establish access design standards in China. Access features, traffic and roadway features of 161 segments from 8 suburban arterials have been collected for this research. Statistical analysis was conducted to understand the relationship between access characteristics and slight crashes, severe crashes, and total crashes. A Negative Binomial regression is used to investigate access and other factors. The significant factors which contribute to the occurrence of crashes are finally identified. The results show that the angle of access between 78 and 105 degrees, access width between 10 and 20.1 meters have less influence on crashes than others. It is proved that numbers of access points, access spacing, road location, road alignment, average operating speed, and traffic volume of trailers all have significant impact on safety.
