Unlike other countries, Australia continues to construct flexible aircraft pavements with thin asphalt surfaces over multiple layers of fine crushed rock base and sub-base. Furthermore, many Australian airports are in coastal areas where marine clays dominate the naturally occurring soils and commonly incorporate hydraulically placed deep sand fills. Flexible Australian aircraft pavement performance depends on the ability to compact and prove the crushed rock and sand fill layers. This was historically done with macro rollers and supercompactors; however, in recent years the availability and performance of these rollers has decreased. This has created a gap in the ability to prove these granular materials, which has been exacerbated by aircraft tyre pressure and wheel loads increasing. A suitable method of addressing this gap must be determined to ensure thin asphalt pavements can continue to be constructed for Australian airports.
