The primary objective of this paper is to analyze freeway operation efficiency and safety of integrated control strategy. The simulation parameters are calibrated and validated using collected data on southbound I-880 freeway in California, the United States. The integrated control is estimated using cascade feedback of mainstream traffic flow control (MTFC-VSL) via variable speed limit. And the application of ramp metering (RM) is connected using specifically developed split-range-like scheme. The integrated control strategy is implemented through VISSIM. The results show that the integrated control had a 41.5% improvement in total travel time (TTT) over the no-control case. Moreover, about 59.8% of total conflicts are reduced by the integrated control strategy than the no-control case. Thus, it is beneficial to well understanding the mechanism of integrated control strategy and using it in practical implementation.
