Most road and railway intersections are vertical crossings, but according to the location of the intersection and the traffic demand of the railway, there are also grade crossings. The grade crossings have a significant influence on urban roads. On the basis of theoretical studies and examples in Nanjing, we analyzed the factors such as crossing closed time and traffic capacity. We analyzed the influences that the factors have on road intersections and traffic jams. The condition of the traffic jams are then evaluated, models built and the delay of the intersection analyzed. This paper also presents measures for widening crossroads, reducing crossing closed time and taking measures for traffic control. The resulting measures should help to alleviate the traffic condition.
