Vehicle following distance is one of the most important factors influencing traffic safety, and the impact of the road adhesion coefficient on the following distance cannot be ignored. This study considers the road adhesion coefficient and proposes an adaptive cruise control model for safe following distance based on varying following states. An experiment, using the MATLAB platform, was conducted; the results show that, compared with the traditional model, the proposed model can effectively shorten the following distance and improve traffic efficiency. In addition, a CarSim simulation was implemented, and the simulation results verified the model’s effectiveness.
