Providing access for cruise ship passengers between the terminal and the ship is critical to the successful operation of a cruise ship terminal. With the ever increasing range of ship shell door locations and the desire to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines, the development of the proper access requires special knowledge. The planning, engineering and design of the passenger loading gangways requires a technical understanding of ADA requirements (local and federal), changing water level effects, ship motions while at berth, passenger shell door locations, operations of the ship and terminal, the overall relationship between the cruise ship line, the cruise terminal operation, and dockside operations. In addition, the science/art of the movement of people must be understood. The gangway must be capable of accommodating up to 2,000 vacationing adults and children passengers per hour, each carrying luggage or packages, as well as persons of a wide range of physical conditions,. The gangway must be comfortable, secured, and natural to use since a large percentage of the passengers are experiencing the gangway system for the first time.
