In order to prevent rail fatigue and eliminate rail damage, rail grinding is widely adopted as the means to restore rail profiles. For the restoring rail profile, the target rail profile is important because of not only the wheel/rail contact performance but also the economic features of rail grinding. To improve the rail grinding profile technology, this paper presents an innovative design method for rail grinding profiles based on wheel-rail interaction performance. Vehicle dynamic performance is chosen as the key target, in which rolling radii difference function is selected as the key factor to determine dynamic performances. Meanwhile, wheel-rail contact distribution is also taken into consideration as an auxiliary target to prevent stress concentration and fatigue growth. By introducing certain presuppositions, the method to obtain the target profile is of inverse-design features, which can be realized using proper discrete numerical methods. The advantage of the method is suitable to cater not only for the straight track but also for the curved track with unsymmetrical rail profiles. The result show good accuracy of the method.
