Existing research on the critical distance for pedestrian access to urban rail transit systems overlooks the effects of vital differences among urban rail transit stations. To overcome these challenges, this study included on-site questionnaires that were distributed at several urban rail transit stations in Nanjing. Analysis of the influential factors affecting pedestrian use of urban rail transit found that specific features of the rail transit station as well as walking distance have an effect on use. Due to these findings, distance was then used as an independent variable to develop a distance attenuation model. The critical distances for pedestrian access to urban rail transit were obtained and ArcGIS was used to analyze various station configurations; while many rail transit stations have a catchment area, or an area from which passengers originate from, that is, circular in nature, non-traditional catchment areas may also exist depending on lines serviced and rail schedule.
