In this study, the effect of hybrid microfiber reinforcement on fracture energy and crack propagation in cement matrix composites is evaluated. The cracks in cement matrix composites are allowed to fracture under Mode I loading using a notched three-point bending beam (3PBB) specimen. Influence of fiber type and their combination is quantified using fracture energy and toughness index. It is demonstrated that a hybrid combination of steel fibers and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) micro-fibers enhances the resistance to both the nucleation and growth of cracks. A micromechanical model of hybrid composites based on a fiber bridging law is used to compare with experimentally measured data. The influencing role of the fiber combination becomes manifest in the fracture tests. The fundamental fracture tests are very effective in characterizing and developing high performance hybrid fiber composites.
