In this study, crash data and traffic data were collected on the I-880 freeway in California from 2006 to 2011 to analyze the relationship between crash characteristics and traffic flow states. To capture these relationships, the study applied NLCCA and proportionality testing to determine if the differences are statistically significant. The primary traffic flow variables and existing research results were applied to analyze the differences in crash characteristics and mechanisms between traffic flow states. To explain the differences, primary traffic flow variables and phenomena in three-phase traffic theory were used.
