This paper describes how Taipei City's ITS/ATIS development experience provides an excellent ITS example on how user-oriented, advanced ITS services can be designed, developed, implemented, and deployed with available information communication technology (ICT) by keeping the end-user in mind in world-class cities. There is an immediate need in many megacities in Asia and throughout the world to elevate traffic management, system control, and operational practice to the next level by maximizing the system, equipment, and personnel already in place.Since most cities and counties are now well-equipped with new control centers, signal systems, and capable operational staff, the results can be significant. Implementation guidelines, real-time data platforms, and information exchange standards are readily available in Taipei for potential implementation elsewhere to improve and deliver sustainable transport in the 21st century.
