Airfield pavements are known to be critical transportation infrastructure assets and their ability to provide adequate load-carrying capacity for anticipated aircraft is one of their primary functions, thus helping to ensure both passenger safety and uninterrupted operation of the airport facilities. In order to assess a runway pavement's load-carrying capacity, the structural condition of the pavement must be systematically monitored and evaluated. With this in mind and based on recent developments concerning globally utilized evaluation techniques, new challenges have been created in the field of airfield pavement evaluation. The present investigation aims to highlight the impact of the evolution of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) evaluation techniques on airfield pavement evaluation. For this reason, an assessment of the structural condition of a runway’s flexible pavement structure is performed, implementing a range of techniques that are both accepted and utilized worldwide, including the incorporation of the most recent developments of the FAA (FAARFIELD). The analysis results indicate that the latest assumptions considered within the FAA methodology may significantly impact evaluation results. The paper presents both the overall procedure followed and the related critical results obtained from the implemented airfield pavement structural evaluation.
