The live loads may significantly affect the performance of buried pipe, particularly under shallow burial. Response of the buried pipe under vehicle loads is investigated here using three-dimensional finite element analysis. The analysis is conducted using the finite element program ANSYS. The study revealed that the influence of pipe on stress due to vehicle load is insignificant if the burial depth is 1.5 times the diameter. Therefore classical theory can be used to calculate the stress on top of the pipe. However, for pipe buried at a depth of 0.5 times the diameter, pipe-soil interaction analysis should be performed to obtain the stresses. It is also revealed that stress on pipe due to any wheel load of a truck is not affected by the other wheel. Ratio of the pipe to soil modulus appeared to affect the soil-pipe interaction for pipe at shallow burial. ASCE 1993 standard provides a reasonably conservative estimate of the effects of live load. However, the code does not include the effect of the material modulus.
