After three year's operation, the review of Shanghai maglev project is mixed. One of the main critiques is that Shanghai maglev system is not fully utilized. Given the very affordable fare prices and highly congested conditions of other modes, many professionals are puzzled. The purpose of this paper is to call particular attention to intermodal coordination, which maybe one of the key factors that affect the success or failure of Shanghai maglev project. As proved by previous research, the Maglev system is designed to supplement, not replace, the existing transportation systems. The Shanghai Maglev system, as the initial segment of large transportation network systems, is bounded to connect and interact with the existing transportation network. If not supplemented by an integrated intermodal transportation network, especially efficient intermodal transfer stations, the maglev investment may become the biggest waster in transportation history.
