Due to the preferential corrosion (in the welds) and general wall thinning of the existing 30" Sea Water (SW) line from the SW Treatment Plant (STP) to Crustaceous Water Module 01 (CW01), new pipeline is being installed at the Greater Kuparuk Area (GKA) North Slope production field of ConocoPhillips, Alaska, in the 2013/2014 winter season. The new 30" x 0.375" WT x 75,000-ft.-long 5L X-65 pipeline, along with its components (block valves, flow meter, pig detectors, etc.), is being installed on the pipe racks adjacent to the existing 30" pipeline. The existing 30" pipeline will be abandoned in place. The construction methodology executed in the arctic conditions and constraints includes the following:• Pipe laid on the cross-country section included hydrotesting using sea water prior to tie-ins;• New road/caribou crossing and gravel pad crossing;• New Vertical Support Members (VSM) and Horizontal Support Members (HSM); VSM were drilled. • Utilization of ice roads during the winter for construction execution. • Fabrication and installation of pipeline anchors, pipeline saddles, and bends • Other pipe-laying activities (i.e., double-jointing, joint coating, insulation, and pigging). This article will present mobilization and construction execution efforts required in arctic conditions for completion of the 30" sea line project in a safe and efficient manner.
