Port facilities experience seabed scour as a result of high-velocity propeller wash directed towards the berth structures, in particular during arrival and departure maneuvers. This scouring action can not only undermine the structural integrity of the marine structures, but also contribute to variations in the bottom profile due to deposition of the scoured material in other areas. This paper presents an overview of the analysis of vessel-induced bottom velocities and design of scour protection systems at Cruise Terminals 1 and 3, Canaveral Port Authority (CPA). Topics covered include propeller wash analysis and modeling, types of scour protection measures considered, lessons learned from previously installed systems, and how those lessons were applied to improved scour protection design at the new Cruise Terminal 3.
