In the vicinity of intersections, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) are a long-term solution contributing significantly toward vehicle cyber physical systems (VCPS) in providing access to cooperative driving system (CDS). In fact, CDS relies on exchanging cooperative driving messages propagated to all or to a selected cluster of vehicles. However, some unique characteristics of VANET (i.e., high vehicle mobility, dynamic topology changes) present challenges to providing seamless connectivity among vehicles. Therefore, to reliably and quickly propagate cooperative driving messages in the vicinity of intersection, we designed a switchover procedure using an opportunistic choice of communication modes between vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) that guarantees seamless connectivity for CDS, and then propose a seamless connectivity-based message propagation mechanism (SC-MPM). The analysis and simulation results show that SC-MPM can significantly improve the performance of four metrics packets in comparison with two representative traffic data propagation methods.
