The Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway system had a long and colorful history in ferry transportation during the late 1800s through the mid 1900s. Two major types of operations were in service: the rail-car ferry for cargo transportation and the cruise style ferry for passenger service. Prior to the revolution of the affordable personal car and interstate style highway networks, these ferries provided a necessary transportation connection between large cities and recreation centers. Today, only a fragment of the passenger and truck water transportation remains, such as small ferries to provide transportation to the islands of Lake Erie, the Detroit-Windsor truck ferry for hazardous cargo, or the Michigan Car Ferry seasonal Ro-Pax (roll-on roll-off with passenger) service.
