A countdown signal displays the number of seconds left till the next signal phase or interval appears. The objective of signal countdown device is to let drivers make a safe decision while approaching a signalized intersection. The countdown installation can enhance the intersection capacity through the headway reduction. The signal countdown device should help to reduce red light running at urban intersections in China since majority of the signal timing design use a fixed amber interval without taking into account of each intersection unique geometric design and traffic characteristics in the country. This paper introduces a study conducted in one signalized intersection in Beijing. The data were collected in two weeks, one week before and one week after the countdown device installation in order to investigate impact of countdown devices on driver behavior. The results show that countdown installation reduces number of passing vehicles during amber interval, greatly reduces red light running frequencies, and reduces emergency braking at the intersection. It is hoped that this research could help to promote the countdown devices at urban intersections in China where uniform amber interval is used in signal timing design at the present time.
