In order to estimate passenger traffic efficiency under different mass transit railway (MTR) station design and operation scenarios, a microscopic simulation model of passenger mustering and evacuation was developed. Passenger flow was considered as an aggregation of a large amount of entities with specific properties and behaviors. Each entity's behavior was classified into three levels with five steps as follows: path finding, move, collision avoidance, node selection, and probabilistic optimization. Models were set up at each level respectively. By simulation, useful indexes can be obtained such as passenger delay, infrastructure level of service distribution, space, and temporal diffusing of bottlenecks. Besides, interesting self-organization phenomena was also found. Examples from the Beijing MTR transfer stations were provided to validate the application of the proposed model. It was concluded that the model was effective at simulating passenger crowd systems.
