In order to obtain the characteristics of traffic congestion in large Chinese cities, this paper proposes to conduct research based on the basic data of Traffic Performance Index (TPI) in Beijing. First, by introducing the concept and characteristics of TPI, two different methods of TPI calculation are compared. Next, according to the sensitivity of the response to congestion change, the method based on severely congested miles ratio is discovered to be more suitable for calculating the TPI of Beijing road network. Finally, the calculation method of TPI in Beijing is introduced through practical cases. By analyzing and comparing the TPI curves of different dates, it is proved that the characteristics of traffic congestion patterns on different dates are different.
