Under the increasingly severe challenge of climate change and resource shortages, green transportation is gaining popularity in China as an important element of low-carbon, eco-city construction. This paper reviewed the policies and practices of green transportation development in recent years. Currently, green transportation measures mainly focus on the preferential development of public transport, improvement of walking and bicycling conditions, establishment of intelligent transportation services, elimination of high-pollution vehicles, and application of new energy vehicles. It is also pointed out that, in the new context of low-carbon eco-city construction, current green transportation policies and practices should be improved to address three weaknesses:(1) indefiniteness of goals in saving energy and reducing emissions; (2) demand side deficiency in greening transportation; and, (3) effect evaluation of green transportation measures. Analysis of this paper could also be a valuable reference to other countries with similar ambitions to develop green transportation systems.
