With urban development and increasing traffic volume, the expansion of urban rail transit has attracted more attention. Rail transit has entered a new era of networking operation in mega cities like Shanghai and Beijing. However, with the continuous increasing of network-scale and operating mileages, potential safety risks emerging from the operational procedures are also increasing. Thus, it is necessary to obtain the implications and impacts which make the rail transit network operation evolve from “passive type” to “active type.” This study examined 663 metro operation accidents that have occurred in the 14 lines of Shanghai for the 2011-2015 period. This data includes accident characteristics, date, location, delay time, and operation status. Temporal and spatial distributions of operational accidents were analyzed using statistical analysis and comparative analysis. The results revealed that vehicle failures and signal failures were the main types of accidents, together accounting for 60% of the total. Signal and power supply equipment were the significant factors influencing the delay time, namely the greatest impact on the users. Identification of the characteristics of metro operational accidents can provide valuable information for development of effective countermeasures to improve metro operational safety in China.
