The aim of this paper was to investigate contributory factors to severe traffic accidents (with more than 10 fatalities each accident) and their interdependence. Association rule mining techniques were applied to identify sets of contributory factors that often occur together in severe traffic accidents. The results show that occurrences of severe traffic accidents are a result of the complex interactions of road user behavior, vehicle factors, road geometric characteristics, and environmental factors. The reasons for the occurrence of severe traffic accidents in different circumstances are discussed, and the potential implications for policymakers are noted. The results of this study can provide useful insights for understanding why serious casualties occur and developing effective policy initiatives for transportation agencies to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by severe traffic accidents.
