PortMiami serves over 110 cruise ships across nine cruise terminals, with another three under construction. PortMiami is also replacing the North Bulkhead for Cruise Berths 1 through 6, requiring new passenger boarding bridges (PBBs) to connect the cruise ships to the terminals. The Port is exploring standardizing its PBBs to increase flexibility, decrease costs, and improve operations for safer and more efficient passenger movements and apron utilization. Cruise ships’ continued growth and additional operational demands have increased the need for added versatility in PBB planning, design, and standardization. This paper explores the planning process performed at PortMiami for the proposed North Bulkhead realignment project. It standardizes new PBBs at the Port to accommodate the ever-changing cruise ships of the future.
