The Naval Station (NAVSTA), San Diego, is a quaywall system with berthing piers extending from it. Larger naval vessels berth at the piers and smaller vessels and support craft berth along the quaywall. The quaywall system was constructed in various increments. The quaywall was constructed between 1918 and 1947 and is approximately 20,000 ft (6096 m) in length. The quaywall is typically comprised of concrete sheet piles and a timber relieving platform. The backland area is usually hydraulic fill. Problems associated with this type of retaining structures are related to migration of soil through the tongue and groove joints of the concrete sheet piles. The loss of fill material from behind the wall creates areas of subsidence and exposes the untreated timbers of the relieving platform to marine borers. This paper discusses various repair methods to successfully prevent soil migration through the sheet pile wall joints and the subsequent marine borer damage.
