Since the year 2000, Villanova University has been working to make the university a more eco-friendly institution. To further promote this movement, in the year 2007, President Father Peter Donohue signed the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) and a new committee, the President’s Environmental Sustainability Committee (PESC), was formed to help address the responsibility of becoming a carbon neutral campus. This study introduces a transportation working group whose missions are focused on identifying and exploring ways to promote: A quality pedestrian campus environment by improving both bicycle and pedestrian transportation. Use of public transportation for commuting such as, investigating possible subsidies/partnerships through Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Safe, efficient local transportation services for the University community. Greater fuel efficiency of Villanova’s vehicle fleet. More specifically, this study presents: (1) the results of the transportation survey that was conducted for both staff and students in 2008 and 2014 to better understand the survey respondents’ travel patterns; and (2) the application of the survey results to identify areas in which PESC could reduce single occupant vehicle transportation. With partnerships among the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Parking Office and the Sustainability Office, Villanova University has applied the transportation survey data to recognize real carbon saving through the institution of new programs and improved advertisement of existing programs.
