Along with the rapid increase of China's expressways, expressway service areas have also developed rapidly. By the end of 2013 China’s expressway service area had reached more than 1800 pairs. In 2012, the policy of small car free passage in major holidays was issued by the Ministry of Transportation, making expressway service areas a hot spot of emerging society The development of expressway service areas is facing great opportunities and challenges. The objective is to enhance the service of expressway service area, better serve the users, and form expressway service area networks of rational layout and clear hierarchy. This article begins from the expressway service area function orientation, and attempts to give expressway service area a hierarchy. A quantitative analysis using the following two methods; node important degree analysis and cluster analysis, was then performed. Finally this analysis was combined with a case using Jiangsu province for empirical analysis.
