Bottleneck effect on a road network is a localized disruption where movement of vehicles were partially obstructed. A bottleneck is a result of a specific physical condition, which can be resultant of situations like vehicular accidents, parking of vehicles on the shoulder lanes also because of a slow moving heavy vehicle, blockage of lanes for any construction activity, etc. Due to the blockage of vehicular movement, disruptions in terms of shock waves over the roads sections will be observed, where vehicles movement will be affected successively one vehicle after another. In the present study, a simulation approach had been adopted in quantifying the effect of bottleneck present in the midblock road sections. From the analysis it was found that the bottleneck section is operating up to its capacity, the section which is near the upstream side of section is highly effected, in terms of capacity reduction. Whereas the section which is on the downstream of the section is not operating beyond the bottleneck capacity. In a similar sense, the sections which are on the upstream is affected based on their distance from the bottleneck. Based on the analysis the bottleneck effect had been examined on the road network.
