The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District (District), provides public transportation services including bus, and ferry. District ferries provide service between San Francisco and Larkspur, and between San Francisco and Sausalito. The District’s ferry facilities are over 40 years old and nearing the end of their useful life. The passenger boarding systems at its three ferry terminals will be replaced with structurally improved, ADA-compliant, and more operationally efficient boarding facilities. Sausalito Ferry Terminal was selected as the first terminal to be replaced. The new boarding system will be located in approximately the same location as the existing facilities and will include a new 150-foot-long by 53-foot-wide concrete float, a new 90-foot-long by 18-foot-wide steel gangway, and a new 96-foot-long by 21-foot-wide pile-supported concrete pier. This paper presents the design process, and describes the details of different components of the terminal.
