Welding of rail is widely used within the continuous welded rail (CWR), the service performance of such welds can be considered in terms of integrity of the joint, the processes improve the continuity and smoothness of the rail. At present, there are three methods in China include flash-butt welding, thermite welding, and gas pressure welding, but suffers from variable quality in finished welds, due to the inherent limitation of the welds processes used and external running conditions of the train, especially under high axle load conditions, the welding ability to support the service loads suffer from fatigue damage or fracture, which influences the extent of impact loading. These performance requirements are unforgiving in terms of weld quality and material characteristics. In response to the causes of failures of welds joints about the high axle load conditions and recognition the influence factors of welding joint failure, which is a major limitation to further increases, a program was undertaken to statistical analysis the welds joint failure with different weld methods and failure characteristics under the high axle loads, and to develop improved rail welding and track maintenance practices which would prolong service life time and meet the performance demands of higher axle loads.
