Nearly all of the expressways in China are covered with asphalt pavement over a semi-rigid base. Traffic from heavy and over-loaded vehicles has caused rutting and reflection cracks on many expressways. It has been proven by various researchers that an asphalt pavement including a large-stone asphalt mix (LAM) base could overcome the previously mentioned problems; however, this information has not been widely accepted in China. In this research, a section of the Wuhan Hezuo expressway made of an asphalt pavement structure including LAM base was analyzed. Considering the non-uniform contact pressure characteristics under a moving load, a finite element software program, ANSYS, was used to calculate the mechanical response of the pavement structure with reinforced geo-grid and non-reinforced geo-grid. Research results revealed that a glass fiber geo-grid can effectively improve the mechanical properties of asphalt pavement with LAM base.
