America’s Central Port, located within the metropolitan St. Louis region, recently completed its new barge terminal and bulk conveyor loading facility. Known as South Harbor, the terminal is located just south of Locks #27, the last lock on the Mississippi River. The terminal will allow access to six North American Class I railroads and four interstate highways to interact with a lock-free and ice-free, public port on the nation’s largest inland waterway. These will come together in concert to create a multi-modal gateway of both regional and national significance. The new harbor consists of a trapezoidal-shaped dredge basin located off the main navigation channel. A twin barge docking area with a conveyor to load bulk commodities onto barges, and four adjacent mooring dolphins. The new harbor also features a 65-foot-high earth-filled sheet pile wall with a deck elevation above the 100-year flood level. This will allow the South Harbor to be operable at all navigable river stages and provide uninterrupted service for exports of agricultural products from Midwestern growers and allows the potential for future container cargo throughout the year.
