The warning threshold is a part of the rear-end collision avoidance system. It is found in previous studies that drivers have different judgments about the thresholds and these judgments seem to be influenced by diverse circumstance. Hence, this experiment seeks to study the choices of driver’s warning thresholds in rear-end collision avoidance system under different speeds. Participants were asked to drive at a high speed in the first trial and then at a low speed in the other one based on an experimental platform which was formed by connecting a driving simulator and an external vehicle equipment called rear-end collision alarming system. In addition, they were provided with six different groups of time to collision (TTC) as rear-end collision thresholds and then they selected the safest and the most appropriate TTC value from the given thresholds based on their own subjective feelings under different speeds. The drivers' choices of TTC safety threshold are discrepant at different speeds. In the case of high speeds, most of the drivers tend to choose a small TTC value. This shows support for that the subjective judgments of drivers are not consistent with the values of objective risk at different speeds.
