Due to the serious pedestrian safety problems and disordered pedestrian traffic at signalized intersections in China, this paper focuses on examining patterns of violation and compliance with the law as well as the affecting factors on pedestrians' violation. Observational studies at crosswalks were done in Nanjing in the spring of 2010. After reporting overall rates of compliance, the characteristics of pedestrians who either violate or comply with the law are described. In addition to the results of a descriptive analysis, logistic regression models are presented, predicting the likelihood of violation by pedestrians as a function of their characteristics, age, gender, and crossing group size. Findings from this study can help researchers and practitioners understand pedestrian behavior in crosswalks of signalized intersections, and promote a better pedestrian crossing environment.
