The evolution of the population in Madrid, where the reduction in Madrid city's proportion of the regional total can be observed, from 75% in 1975 to 57% in 1996, and with the trend being towards a continued reduction. Thus, one could say that Madrid metropolitan area, with more than 5 million inhabitants, relatively high car ownership, high public transport modal split and rather traffic congestion, is involved in an ongoing maturity process, pointed up during the last years.
