Fog doubles the risk of accidents and modifies driving behavior in a way that leads to greater risk-taking. In a series of experiments performed in a fog chamber and on a driving simulator, we looked at the perceptive difficulties that drivers may encounter under such conditions. We notably tested the hypotheses of an underestimation of speed and an overestimation of headway in fog. While we did not observe any influence of fog on speed perception, our results show a major phenomenon of overestimation of headway. Our studies also show that headway perception can be improved by an appropriate rear fog-light design.
