The organization of long-distance passenger flow plays a vital role in the process of line planning. It can improve the efficiency, capacity utilization, and service quality of railway transportation. The organization of long-distance passenger flow is a hot but hard topic, as it involves so many factors and the relationship among them is very complicated. This paper focuses on the organization mode choice of long-distance passengers under different conditions. First, the basic organization schemes of long-distance passengers are discussed. Then, the influence factors of operating long-distance passenger trains are analyzed. In order to evaluate different passenger organization schemes, a cost function is established. Next, a numerical example is presented and examined. The result of the numerical example shows that the proposed method can offer support for decision-making of railway operators. Finally, as passenger transferring is unavoidable sometimes, methods for improving passenger transferring efficiency are discussed.
