The performance of unique, variable emittance electrochromic “skins,” based on Conducting Polymers (CPs) as the active electrochromic material coupled with several different ionic liquids as the electrolyte and unique surface coatings that minimize the solar absorptance α(s), is described. These have wide operating temperature, operate in space vacuum without any seals, have α(s) values as low as 0.3. The skins show tailorable emittance ε variations from 0.19 to 0.90 with Δε up to 0.5. Extended thermal vacuum, atomic‐O, micrometeoroid, VUV and other studies show excellent space durability. Tests results on these skins obtained at several independent laboratories, at various aerospace firms in the U.S. and Europe and at another NASA center, are also briefly described herein.
