A brief overview of the concept of space power beaming systems with solar‐pumped lasers as the in‐space energy source is presented. For the past two decades under auspicious of NASA‐Langley Research Center we have pursued a solar‐pumped laser development program and searched its space applications including laser‐beamed propulsion. Among various laser media evaluated for suitability the iodine photodissociation laser was found to be the best qualified and could be scaled up to a lightweight space borne system. The results of the proof‐of‐the concept experiments will be provided.
