Bengkalis Regency is one of the regencies in Riau Province, Indonesia which often experiences forest and land fires. The peatlands that dominate this area make Bengkalis Regency vulnerable to fire during the dry season and can cause a lot of losses. The purpose of this research is to explore the dynamics of the burned areas in Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia during 2015-2020 using Landsat 8 Satellite Imagery. The burned areas were obtained using the calculation of Normalized Burned Ratio (NBR) index. At moderate low to high severity levels (dNBR>270), particularly, the fire severity level was used to determine whether areas of the Bengkalis Regency are burned. To prevent misclassification of the burned areas brought on by cloud disturbance, the burned areas was visually rectified. The results show that the large burned areas were found in 2019 (13,435.47 ha) and 2015 (9,902.81 ha), coincides with the El Nino and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events in Indonesia. During 2015-2020, most of the burned areas were located on the mainland of Sumatra Island (16,551.63 ha / 2.7% of Bengkalis Regency on the mainland of Sumatra Island), while the highest percentage of burned areas were found in Rupat Island (11,495.13 ha / 7.5% of the Rupat Island). From a total of 33,318.56 ha of burned areas, most of them were found in open field (25.74%), wet shrubs (23.60%), mixed dry agriculture (20.38%), and plantations / garden (20.23%).
