We discuss the development of detector arrays that are capable of demodulating an image using phase-sensitive detection. Our goal is a small, robust, low power consuming and light weight combustion diagnostic for NASA flight experiments: for major species concentrations using Raman scattering; and for particle size, number density and degree of agglomeration using particle scattering and extinction. Our plan is to use a modulated diode laser coupled to a demodulating linear or 2-D array, to make spatially distributed measurements. The demodulating arrays can also be manufactured and sold into numerous terrestrial markets. In this paper we describe several of the diagnostic techniques we plan to use, the demodulation approach we plan to take, and a commercialization arrangement already in place with Princeton Instruments, Inc.
