The paper considers the issue of approximation of electric steel magnetizing curves, that is critical in design of electromechanical devices of different purpose. The brief overview of literature under this subject is given. Formulas for the most common approximating functions have been considered. Real magnetizing curves for steel 1411, 2013 and 3413, for which approximation was performed, are demonstrated in tabular data and graphs. Coefficients, forming a part of approximating function formulas, were found by the least square method in Mathcad mathematical software. Comparison of the considered approximating functions under the error dispersion minimum criterion has been performed. Graphs of magnetizing curves functions with the least approximation error dispersions are given. Recommendations for selection and application of approximating functions for their use in design of electric machines have been given.
