Each of the systems such as aeroplanes, auto driven cars, metro rails and power grids are built with components of different structures and materials. With the advancements in material technology and microelectronics, it is possible to embed intelligence at structural, material and component levels of a system in order to improve its performance. Examples of intelligent systems in nature and how the salient operational features of these systems are imbibed into engineering systems are explained under Intelligent Systems below. The intelligence makes the system ‘smart’ with ability for quick sensing, processing and control. The smart systems are also capable of making assertions based on available data and using the data to moderate previous assertions. In general, smart systems are microminiaturized devices. A typical example is a cloud of ‘smart dust’ which is a tiny dust size electronic device. They are so small and light weight to remain suspended in air to monitor environmental parameters like temperature. Three generations of smart systems with typical examples are: Gen1: object recognition, Gen 2: miniaturized artificial cochlea and Gen 3: combining technical intelligence and cognitive functions of Internet of Things (IoT). Integration of smart systems involves merging of functional and technical abilities of its components to become an interoperable system. Major challenge is integration of multitude of components of different technologies and materials. The areas of adoption of smart systems include transportation, manufacturing and healthcare. A typical example in aerospace domain is Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) system. The current development spectrum of smart systems spans from prototypes for various applications such as smart dust to commercial products like IVHM system. The future of smart system technology is highly promising as it would accelerate further development of IoT applications to provide smart functionality to everyday objects encompassing industrial goods. In the healthcare domain, smart system technology helps to develop better diagnostic tools, treatments and quality of life which would economize healthcare systems.
