The velocity interferometer experiments provided the time‐resolved measurements of impulsive force generated on ablators of different materials by laser ablation. In the preliminary experiments, a Nd:YAG pulse laser beam was irradiated on an aluminum‐foil. The laser pulse energy was 0.5 J at the maximum, and its full width at the half maximum (FWHM) was 7 ns. The history of impulsive force was inferred from the velocity history of the foil surface, which was measured using the velocity interferometer with the time resolution at 6.5‐ns. The results showed that the impulsive force continued for more than 40‐ns when the pulse duration is less than 20‐ns.
