Signaling and control systems for a network rail need to have timely information on the position of trains. That is essential for performing its primary function of traffic management for preventing collisions and derailments. The fundamental requirements of train detection systems are proof of train presence for controls and updating of train position. The aim of the article is to search for promising innovative technical solutions that increase the accuracy of the definition of the train and ensure the safety of train traffic control on the main and industrial railways. Existing technologies for trade-based train detection are track circuits and axle counters. These systems have the capability of providing a failsafe occupancy status of the track section. But the train position is only available at a specific point and time and therefore a continuous update about the position on the train is not possible. The advantage of using fiber-optic sensors is that they overcome some of the limitations associated with track circuits and axles count.
