NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope was designed for supportability by Space Shuttle astronauts performing extravehicular activities (EVAs), or spacewalks, to service, maintain, repair, and upgrade the telescope. Through three successful servicing missions to date, EVA processes have been developed by applying a series of important lessons learned. These lessons learned are also applicable to many other future human spaceflight and robotic missions, such as International Space Station, satellite retrieval and servicing, and long-duration spaceflight. HST has become NASA’s pathfinder for observatories, EVA development, and EVA mission execution.
